Rijeka has a history of shipbuilding since the time of the Savior. Our missionaries invited us to tour the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral with them last Monday. The museum preserves historical items from prehistoric times to the recent past. We learned of Rijeka Port at its peak producing thousands of ships
The Maritime Museum is housed in the former palace of the governor of the Austrian- Hungarian Empire. Perry and I had visited once before but we took the time to read some of the fine print and enjoyed it more this time.
Did you know that the first ship to arrive at the Titanic was the Carpathia, on its regular route between New York and Rijeka? Many sailors on the ship were Croatian. In this maritime museum is one of the five remaining Titanic life vests.
