Plitvitce Lakes National Park is a 73,000 acre forest reserve in central Croatia known for it's 16 interconnected terraced lakes, and over 90 waterfalls. There are all sizes of waterfalls. There are hiking trails and wooden walkways that wind around the lakes and waterfalls. Wikipedia says " the lakes of Plitvitce are the result of centuries old processes of calcium carbonate which is abundantly available in the area. By passing through the limestone underground the karst rivers dissolve calcite which concentrates in the water. The water becomes supersaturated with minerals. The sedimentations produce travertine that creates the lakes. The lakes function as one system and are ever changing. The lakes have different colors depending on their mineral composition." In our words, the water is beautiful blue and clear!!
There are several different hikes possible. I think we chose the one which covered most of the park. There is an electric boat ride that links the upper and lower lakes. At the end of the hike an electric bus brought us back to our starting position.
We loved seeing all of the waterfalls and taking photos of the missionaries against the beautiful backdrop. Here are some photos of our wonderful young missionaries.
